Padma Shri for Reba Kanta Mahanta for Promoting Sattriya Culture
New Delhi: Reba Kanta Mahanta, a well-known promoter of Sattriya culture, has been honoured with the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art.
Born on April 19, 1935, Mahanta is the Sattradhikar of Khatpar Sattra in Sibsagar, Assam. He is especially known for Sattriya mask making and Mukha Bhaona, a traditional form of drama using masks.
His handmade masks have been displayed in national and international museums and exhibitions, including in India, Russia, Japan, Australia, and the USA. He has also held workshops and performed across the country to promote Sattriya art and culture.
Reba Kanta Mahanta has received several other prestigious awards over the years, including the Shilp Guru Award (2008), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2015), and Bishnu Rabha State Award (2019).
The Padma Shri was presented to him by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, May 27, during the Civil Investiture Ceremony-II held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
