MoU Inked for NCDC Regional Branch in Assam

Guwahati: The Health and Family Welfare Department of the Assam government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on December 18. The agreement focuses on establishing a Regional Branch of NCDC in Rani, Kamrup, Assam.

The regional branch aims to enhance disease surveillance, monitoring, and early intervention. By coordinating with the NCDC headquarters in New Delhi, the state branch will ensure real-time data sharing and information exchange, facilitated by cutting-edge technology. This collaborative effort is crucial for timely disease detection and intervention, ultimately strengthening public health infrastructure in the northeastern region.

Health Minister Shri Keshav Mahanta highlighted the pivotal role of disease surveillance in preventing, controlling, and managing health issues. The establishment of the regional NCDC branch is expected to contribute significantly to public health in the Northeast.

Additional Chief Secretary Shri Avinash Joshi emphasized the mission’s goal to build an IT-enabled disease surveillance system. This involves creating a network of surveillance laboratories at various levels and strengthening health units at Points of Entry for effective detection, investigation, and prevention of public health emergencies and disease outbreaks.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, Government of India (virtually), Dr. M S Lakshmi Priya, MD NHM, Assam, and other key officials from both entities and development partners.
