Guwahati: Journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder walked out of Guwahati Central Jail on Saturday, March 29, 2025. His release came a day after he secured bail in the second case filed against him.
Police arrested Mozumder on March 25 while covering a protest against alleged financial irregularities in Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Limited. Where, BJP MLA Biswajit Phukan serves as a Chairman.
A court granted him bail on March 26, but authorities re-arrested him on March 27 in connection with another case. Assam Cooperative Apex Bank’s Managing Director, Dambaru Saikia, filed the second case. The fresh charges accused Mozumder of attempting to steal crucial documents, following earlier allegations of criminal intimidation and abusing a Scheduled Tribe member.
Mozumder’s lawyer argued in court that his re-arrest aimed to harass and silence him for reporting on sensitive issues. The court considered the arguments and approved his bail, leading to his release from jail.
The journalist’s arrest and re-arrest have sparked concerns among media professionals and rights activists, who view it as an attack on press freedom in Assam.
