Guwahati Witnesses Accident-Free New Year’s Eve, Says Police

Guwahati: Strong traffic management and strict enforcement by the Guwahati Police ensured an accident-free New Year’s Eve in the city. According to police records, no road accident was reported on 31 December 2025, highlighting the success of coordinated traffic planning, night patrolling, and public awareness efforts during one of the busiest days of the year.

On other hand The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has shown strong performance in 2025 by effectively controlling crime and improving case disposal. The police worked on both crime prevention and detection, which led to positive results across many areas.

In 2025, a total of 5,786 cases were registered, which is much lower compared to 7,412 cases in 2024 and 9,393 cases in 2023. By the end of 2025, the number of pending cases stood at 2,882. Since 2021, when pending cases were 35,396, the police have reduced pendency by more than 32,000 cases within four years.

The charge sheet rate also improved significantly. In 2025, it reached 68.34%, compared to 42.56% in 2024 and **19.13% in 2023.

The conviction rate has shown major improvement as well. It increased from 4% in 2021 to 28.5% in 2025. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the conviction rate was a high 86.08%. In the implementation of the new criminal laws, Assam has secured the No. 1 rank in the country.

Crimes related to property have reduced sharply. In 2025, 1,854 cases were registered, which is much lower than 2,804 cases in 2024 and 3,752 cases in 2023. The police also improved recovery of stolen items. Strict night patrolling and quick police response played a major role in this reduction. During the year, 2,118 persons were arrested for property-related crimes.

Cases of vehicle theft also declined. In 2025, 553 cases were reported, compared to 1,118 in 2024 and 1,032 in 2023. The police arrested 239 persons and recovered 267 vehicles, achieving a recovery rate of 48.2%, which is much higher than previous years.

In cases of mobile phone theft, 203 cases were registered and 203 persons were arrested. A total of 1,159 mobile phones were recovered.

The police continued their strong action against drug-related crimes. In 2025, 406 NDPS cases were registered and 555 persons were arrested. The police seized 11.919 kg of heroin, 529.301 kg of ganja, 9,865 psychotropic syrups, and 34,918 psychotropic tablets. The total market value of the seized drugs is estimated at ₹28.86 crore.

The Cyber Police Station at Panbazar, established in 2023, made notable progress. In 2025, it recovered ₹6.28 crore from cyber fraud cases and returned the amount to victims. During the year, 18 cases were registered and 1,784 enquiries were conducted. Cyber crime awareness programmes were also held regularly.In the area of traffic management, 1,026 accident cases were reported in 2025, which is lower than 1,218 cases in 2024. Notably, no accident was reported on 31st December 2025. Despite many large events held in the city, traffic movement remained smooth throughout the year.

Overall, the performance of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate in 2025 reflects effective policing, better case management, and improved public safety in the city.
