GUWAHATI – The Guwahati High Court has granted regular bail to Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, one of the key accused in the high-profile Paltan Bazar child torture case that shocked the city in 2023. The court ordered her release after spending over two and a half years in judicial custody.

Dr. Dutta was arrested on May 7, 2023, along with her husband, Dr. Walliul Islam, and others. They were accused of severely torturing their three-year-old foster daughter, with allegations that included tying the child to a terrace in direct sunlight without food or water, leading to grievous injuries.

Strict Bail Conditions Imposed

While ordering her release, the court set stringent conditions. Dr. Dutta must furnish a bail bond of ₹1,00,000 with two sureties. She is prohibited from contacting the victim or the informant, must surrender her passport and ID documents, cannot leave the court’s jurisdiction without permission, and is barred from tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.

The trial against Dr. Sangeeta Dutta and the other accused in Sessions (Special) Case No. 112/2023 will continue, but her release marks a pivotal turn in a case that has been closely watched for its brutality and legal complexities.
