Guwahati: In a major step towards preparing students for careers in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and analytics, the Department of Statistics at Gauhati University has launched a Five-Year Integrated B.Sc.–M.Sc. Programme in Data Analytics from the 2026–27 academic session under the NEP 2020 framework.
The newly introduced programme aims to equip students with industry-oriented analytical and technical skills at a time when AI, machine learning and data-driven technologies are rapidly transforming sectors such as healthcare, finance, business, sports, media and public policy.
According to global industry projections, the demand for skilled data professionals is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The World Economic Forum has identified Big Data Specialists and AI Specialists among the fastest-growing professions worldwide, while NASSCOM has projected a sharp rise in demand for AI and data science professionals in India.
The programme will combine core subjects including Statistics, Mathematics and Programming to provide students with comprehensive training in modern data analytics and computational methods.
Under the structure of the programme, students will receive a B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Data Analytics after completing four years, with the option to continue for a fifth year to earn an integrated M.Sc. degree.
The university stated that the course has been designed to create future-ready professionals capable of building careers in AI, analytics, machine learning and the broader digital economy.
