Extortionist in Upper Assam Injured During Escape Attempt

Moran : An extortionist, identified as Hem Chetia, sustained bullet injuries on Sunday while attempting to escape police custody in the Khowang locality under Moran circle in Dibrugarh district, Upper Assam. Hem Chetia has been allegedly involved in demanding extortion money in the name of the banned organization ULFA, Assam police said.

The incident occurred when the police were handling the arrested extortionist. Hem Chetia attempted to escape, leading to the injury. He was immediately taken to a medical facility for treatment.

In the recent past extortion demands have been received by some business persons in Upper Assam in the name of banned organisation ULFA [irrespective of genuine or fake]. However, Assam’s media reported that ULFA denied any involvement in such extortion activities and urged the authorities to stop harassing local residents in the name of the organization.
