Elections in Assam Held on the Basis of ‘Faulty Voter List’: AASU President
Guwahati: AASU president Utpal Sharma on Wednessday said that elections in Assam have always been held on the basis of a faulty voter list. He said illegal migrants’ names still appear in the rolls, as even the court has admitted. Sharma argued that Assam will get a clean voter list only when it is corrected using a proper NRC without Bangladeshi names.
He criticised Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for saying that even people who arrived “two days ago” can register as voters. Sharma called this remark misleading and said it creates confusion among the public.
He questioned whether the Election Commission can ensure that such people have had their names removed from voter lists in their earlier states. Sharma added that Assam’s political future must be decided only by its indigenous voters.
He warned that allowing “floating voters” would repeat past problems that led to the Assam Movement, where over 800 people died. Sharma urged the CEO to be sensitive while making statements on the issue.
