Guwahati: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has written to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, expressing strong opposition to the demolition of Mahafezkhana, a 160-year-old British-era land record office in Panbazar, Guwahati.
In his letter, Saikia termed the demolition a violation of the Assam Heritage (Tangible) Protection Act, 2020. He stated that replacing the historic site with a park is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent for Assam’s heritage conservation efforts.
He emphasized that heritage buildings are irreplaceable treasures that connect people to their past and serve as sources of inspiration and learning for future generations. The destruction of such sites undermines Assam’s rich cultural legacy and the state’s commitment to protecting historical monuments.
