Guwahati: The court on Thursday heard bail applications in the case related to the mysterious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. The hearing took place at the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court.
Two accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, suddenly withdrew their bail applications during the hearing. The reason for withdrawing the pleas has not been officially stated, but it is believed that fear of public anger may have led to the decision.
The court heard bail pleas of Amritprabha Mahanta, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora and reserved its order. The verdict on their bail applications will be delivered on January 30.
During the hearing, government lawyers strongly opposed granting bail. A five-member special public prosecutor team formed by the Assam government, led by senior advocate Ziaul Kamal, argued that the accused should not be released at this stage.
The defence argued in court that Amritprabha Mahanta should not be blamed, stating that she is young and has not committed any mistake.
Meanwhile, Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg appealed on social media that no accused should get bail until the case is fully heard and the guilty are punished. She said that the family and the people of Assam are still waiting to know the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s death and have faith in the justice system despite pain and uncertainty.
It may be noted that the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested seven accused in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore. Of them, five had applied for bail. The other two accused—Siddharth Sharma and Shekharjyoti Goswami—have not yet filed bail applications.
Although a Singapore court termed the death as natural, Assam Police has treated the case as a murder involving a planned conspiracy and has already filed a chargesheet. The legal process is currently ongoing, and the withdrawal of bail pleas by two accused has sparked wide discussion across the state.
