CM Inaugurates New Campus of Rabindranath Thakur University in Hojai
Hojai: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Campus of Rabindranath Thakur University at Hojai. Built on 82 bighas of land at a cost of ₹55.5 crore, the new campus includes an academic block, an administrative building, and the office of the Vice-Chancellor. Departments like Pharmacy and other science streams have already shifted from the old Hojai College to the new campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sarma said the inauguration marks a new era for the university, which began in 2019 with 3,500 students and 35 programmes. He announced an additional ₹50 crore for further development and directed the district administration to build a 1.5 km connecting road to the National Highway. He also informed that the ITI at Hojai has been handed over to the university, creating its third campus.
The Chief Minister stressed that education must keep pace with modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Semiconductors, warning that those unaware of such innovations would be “illiterate in the true sense.” He also highlighted the growing demand for courses in commerce, stock exchange, and financial inclusion.
Dr. Sarma underlined the need for universities to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship to keep Assam competitive. He pointed to projects like a semiconductor plant at Jagiroad, a 3,200 MW thermal power project at Dhubri, and bamboo-based ethanol at Numaligarh as examples of Assam’s industrial growth.
He further informed that Japan is keen to recruit 50,000 skilled youths from Assam, while Singapore has also shown interest. He encouraged students to learn Japanese or English to benefit from such opportunities.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to education, the Chief Minister said initiatives like Nijut Moina are helping to fight child marriage and reduce school dropouts. He noted that Assam already has IIT, AIIMS, and the National Forensic Sciences University and will soon have an IIM as well.
