CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launches Nijut Moina 2.0 to Support 4 Lakh Girl Students in Assam
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma launched Nijut Moina 2.0 at a state-level event held at Birinchi Kumar Barua Auditorium, Gauhati University. With this launch, the government began distributing application forms for the scheme, which aims to offer monthly financial help to 4 lakh girl students in 2025-26.
Under Nijut Moina 2.0, eligible students will receive:
- ₹1,000 per month for Higher Secondary (HS) students,
- ₹1,250 for Undergraduate (UG) students,
- ₹2,500 for Postgraduate (PG) students.
The scheme also covers B.Ed students.
While speaking at the event, Dr. Sarma said, “Nijut Moina is not just a scheme, it’s a ray of hope for many girls and families. It encourages education and helps them build a brighter future.”
He announced that unlike Nijut Moina 1.0, which included only state universities and provincial colleges, version 2.0 will also include Central Universities in Assam like Tezpur University and Assam University.
Last year, 1.6 lakh girl students benefited from the scheme. This year, the government has expanded the coverage to include first and second-year students of HS, UG, and PG courses. Final-year UG students will be included next year. Dr. Sarma shared the goal of supporting 10 lakh girl students under the scheme soon.
The Chief Minister added that even students of self-financing courses and state universities will now benefit from Nijut Moina. He said the scheme would help families who want to educate their daughters but struggle financially.
Dr. Sarma also stressed that schemes like Orunodoi and Nijut Moina are inclusive, benefiting students across all castes, communities, and religions. “We want to give every student the chance to build a better future,” he said.
Highlighting Assam’s growing education sector, the Chief Minister shared that the state now has:
- 25 medical colleges,
- Over 25 universities,
- Nearly 400 colleges.
He also mentioned the upcoming Swahid Kanaklata Baruah University, and key institutions like IIT, AIIMS, IIIT, Sainik School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, and Adarsha Vidyalaya, calling them part of an “academic revolution.”
Addressing the issue of child marriage, Dr. Sarma said, “With the launch of Nijut Moina 2.0, 4 lakh girls will have a reason to continue their education and avoid early marriage. We aim to bring child marriage cases to zero by 2026.”
The application forms distributed will be submitted at institutions and data uploaded via SCERT, Darpan, and Samarth Portals.
Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, GU VC Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, and other senior officials attended the event.
