Guwahati: Host India is all set to make a mark at the BWF World Junior Badminton Championships 2025, returning to India after 17 years. The championships will be held at the National Centre of Excellence, Guwahati, from October 6–19, with 36 teams competing in the Suhandinata Cup (Mixed Team Championships) followed by the Eye Level Cup (Individual Championships).
India, seeded second, is in Group H alongside Nepal, Sri Lanka, and UAE, and are favorites to top the group. The squad features strong juniors, including junior world number one Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda, Rakshitha Sree, and doubles pair Bhargav Ram Arigela–Viswa Tej Gobburu, who were world number one in boys doubles earlier this year.
The championships will follow a new best-of-three set relay-scoring format, with each set played to 45 points. Experts believe India has a strong chance to win multiple medals, including a historic mixed team medal.
India’s main medal hopes in girls’ singles are Tanvi Sharma, Vennala K, Unnati Hooda, and Rakshitha Sree. In boys’ singles, juniors Rounak Chohan and Gnana Dattu TT lead the charge. The doubles teams, backed by international coach Ivan Sozonov, are also expected to deliver strong performances.
Matches will be free for spectators at the NCE, and semi-finals and finals will be broadcast live on DD Sports, with early rounds streamed on BAI YouTube.
India opens its campaign against Nepal on Monday, followed by matches against Sri Lanka and UAE. Knockout-stage matches are expected to feature top contenders like China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia.
