The Central Government and India’s top tyre companies have started a big project to grow more rubber in Meghalaya and the Northeast. The goal is to make India self-reliant in rubber and reduce imports from other countries.

A modern rubber nursery was set up in 2021 at Umshru-Paham village in Ri-Bhoi district. This 40-hectare nursery, made by Omega Green Solutions with help from the Central Rubber Board, grows high-quality rubber saplings for farmers.

Four top tyre companies of India, working through the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA), have invested ₹1100 crore in this project, called the INROAD project. The first goal is to grow rubber on 3,000 hectares of land in the region.

On Tuesday, M. Vasanthagesan from the Central Rubber Board and Arun Mammen from ATMA visited the nursery to check its progress. Mr. Vasanthagesan said the project will give jobs to many young people and improve rubber production. Mr. Mammen said this project will help all of Northeast India.

People in the region will get good benefits from this project, but rubber can be collected only after about seven years. This project is expected to bring jobs, income, and a better future for the people in the Northeast.
