Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a major policy shift in driving license issuance. Addressing the media after the state cabinet meeting at the Assam Public Service Building on Sunday, he revealed that district transport offices (DTOs) will no longer issue driving licenses. Instead, licensed driving institutes will handle the process.

To facilitate this, 126 constituencies across Assam will have uniform driving institutes equipped with automated driving tracks. The initiative aims to provide opportunities for unemployed local youth to establish driving schools.
