Guwahati: Assam Congress leader and advocate Mridul Islam passed away on Wednesday after reportedly succumbing to health issues caused by tear gas shells fired during the Congress’ ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ march in Guwahati. Islam, who served as the co-coordinator of Assam Congress’ Kamrup Rural Digital Vahini, was hospitalized before his death.

The Assam Congress condemned the incident. The party accused the police of using “indiscriminate” and “excessive” force during the peaceful protest.

Party leaders claimed that Islam was peacefully participating when authorities used “brute force,” resulting in injuries that ultimately led to his death.

The march was part of a nationwide protest against the government.

The Congress demanded an independent investigation, legal action against the involved police personnel, and compensation for Islam’s family, emphasizing the need to ensure justice and prevent such incidents in the future.
