Guwahati: On the very first day of the New Year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced good news for state government employees. The Assam government has decided to constitute the 8th State Pay Commission, making Assam the first state in the country to take such a step.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister at an official event held in Guwahati on January 1. He said that the decision comes at a time when government employees have been waiting for clarity on salary revision for a long period.

Chief Minister Sarma informed that former Aditional Chief Secretary Subhas Das has been appointed as the Chairman of the 8th State Pay Commission. He pointed out that although the Central Government has already issued the Terms of Reference for the 8th Central Pay Commission, no state had so far formed its own pay commission. “Today, Assam has taken a bold decision. With this, Assam has become the first state in the country to set up a State Pay Commission,” the Chief Minister said.

The announcement has created enthusiasm among state government employees, who are hopeful that the formation of the Pay Commission will speed up the process of salary revision and strengthen their financial security.

Economic experts, however, noted that while the commission has been constituted, its recommendations and implementation may take some time. Still, the move has been widely welcomed as a positive and employee-friendly step.
