Biswanath: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the headquarters of the 5th Assam Police Commando Battalion at Pabhoi in Biswanath district today. The battalion, spread over 218 bighas, is equipped with modern facilities for an elite commando force.
The plan to set up five commando battalions — in Biswanath, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia — was approved by the Assam Cabinet in July 2022. Dr. Sarma had laid the foundation stone for the Biswanath unit on December 10, 2022, and within three years, the project has been completed.
The new battalion includes housing for 400 commandos, nine watchtowers, barracks, residential quarters, shooting range, parade ground, training rooms with computers, and underground bunkers. It is expected to become a centre of excellence for commando training in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that strong action by Assam Police has helped reduce crime across the state. He praised the rapid development of Biswanath district, mentioning projects such as the upcoming medical college, a new stadium, and new buildings for the DC office and Circuit House.
Dr. Sarma said that before 2016, Biswanath had very few paved roads, but now almost all roads are blacktopped, including those in tea garden areas. He also noted improvements in Anganwadi centres and new high schools.
The Chief Minister urged people to continue supporting the government’s efforts to make Biswanath a model district of Assam.
Health Minister Ashok Singhal, MP Ranjit Dutta, several MLAs, and top police officers including DGP Harmeet Singh and SDGP Munna Prasad Gupta attended the inauguration ceremony.
