Guwahati: B. Borooah College (Autonomous) celebrated its 83rd Foundation Day with a full-day programme on the campus. The celebration started with Principal Dr. Satyendra Nath Barman hoisting the flag in the presence of teachers and students, followed by offering floral tributes at the bust of Bhola Nath Borooah, the founder of the college.
Before the general meeting, lady teachers sang the college anthem together. The open meeting was led by the principal and attended by chief guest Prof. Abani Bhagawati of Gauhati University. College governing body president Prof. Partha Pratim Baruah was the guest of honour. Vice Principal Dr. Nripendra Ram Kalita and Teachers’ Unit president Dr. Uptal Chowdhury were also present. The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp with chanting of the Dwip Mantra by students.
In his speech, Dr. Barman highlighted the achievements of the college, including its NAAC grade, autonomous status and good performance in NIRF rankings. He also announced a new annual award in the name of Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi. The first award will be given to Shri Prafulla Govinda Baruah, proprietor of The Assam Tribune group of publications. As Shri Baruah is unwell, the award will be presented at his residence later, but the citation was read out at the meeting.
Former principals, teachers and staff were honoured with traditional phulam gamusas. The college also presented awards to this year’s batch toppers from English, Education and Zoology departments. Towards the end, prizes were given to winners of friendly games for teachers and staff. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Satyabrata Baruah.
