Guwahati: The Assam Assembly once again saw a heated argument between Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi during the Winter Session on Friday. Their verbal clash stopped the House proceedings and created a tense situation.

The incident took place during a discussion on important issues related to tea gardens. MLA Akhil Gogoi was repeatedly interrupting the debate, which prompted Minister Bimal Bora to question his behaviour. Bora told him in the middle of the House, “Do you study or not? You keep shouting without any reason. This is a sacred Assembly and you must respect its dignity.”

The Opposition reacted strongly to the minister’s remarks, leading to further chaos. Before this clash, Speaker Biswajit Daimary had already once suspended Akhil Gogoi during the question hour for disorderly behaviour.

Minister Bimal Bora told the house that Akhil Gogoi often gives wrong statements to the media. He suggested that there should be a separate room to keep the suspended MLA so that he cannot “mislead people.”

Akhil Gogoi also hit back. Speaking to journalists, he said that the minister has “very little understanding” of law and democracy. “We studied together. He does not understand the Constitution, governance or people’s freedom of speech,” he said.

Akhil Gogoi has been suspended several times in the last four years for creating disruptions in almost every Assembly session.

The latest clash has once again shown the ongoing tension between the Sivasagar MLA and the State Government inside the Assembly.
