Guwahati: Police have arrested the absconding driver involved in the recent deadly road accident at Mathgharia. The accused, Shamim Ahmed, was caught in Lahowal area of Dibrugarh district.

According to police, the arrest was made during a special operation based on secret information. Around 3:30 PM, officials from Mohanbari Outpost noticed Shamim moving suspiciously near the Mohanbari bypass. A joint team of traffic police and Lahowal Police, led by officers Gaurav Gogoi, Kaustabhmani Gogoi, and Kaushik Chetia, then detained him.

Shamim Ahmed is currently being held at Lahowal Police Station. A team from Guwahati Police is on its way to Dibrugarh and is expected to bring him back for further investigation.

The case is related to a tragic accident that recently shook the state. Three young women — Armina Ahmed, Akanksha Saikia, and Pooja Saha — were killed when a speeding Maruti Swift (AS-01-GP-0562) crashed into a stationary cement-loaded truck near Gate Hospital in Mathgharia during early morning hours.

After the accident, the driver had fled from the spot, leading to a large police search operation. Police said the arrest is a major breakthrough in the case. The accused will be questioned to find out the exact cause of the accident. Further investigation is ongoing.

Mathgharia Accident Probe Handed Over to Noonmati Police

The investigation into the tragic road accident at Mathgharia, where three young women lost their lives, has now been handed over to Noonmati Police. Earlier, the case was being handled by traffic police. However, considering the seriousness of the incident, authorities have decided to shift the probe to Noonmati Police for a more detailed and faster investigation.

Police sources said a case has already been registered (No. 66/2026). Both parties involved in the accident have been included in the case—the driver of the speeding Maruti Swift and the truck that was parked on the roadside. Officials have confirmed the registration numbers of both vehicles and are continuing the investigation based on these details.

The accident, which took place early Sunday morning, had created shock across the state. The Swift car had crashed into a stationary truck with great force, killing three women on the spot. The driver had fled after the incident but was later arrested by police. With the case now under Noonmati Police, all aspects will be closely examined. These include the speed of the car, possible negligence by the driver, the position of the parked truck, and whether traffic rules were followed.

Police said evidence is being collected, and strict legal action will be taken based on the findings. They also assured that there will be no negligence in ensuring justice. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about road safety in Guwahati, especially regarding overspeeding and improper parking of heavy vehicles.
