Guwahati: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Saturday paid a courtesy visit to former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta at his residence in Guwahati and extended New Year greetings.
During the visit, Debabrata Saikia met Mahanta along with his family and exchanged warm wishes. He conveyed his heartfelt greetings on the occasion of the English New Year and also extended belated birthday wishes to the veteran leader, who is regarded as one of the main architects of regional politics in Assam.
The meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and also included Mahanta’s wife Dr. Jayashree Goswami Mahanta and their son Advocate Shyamanta Kashyap. The leaders discussed various issues concerning the state during the interaction.
Meanwhile, political sources said that Shyamanta Kashyap’s name is being considered as a possible candidate for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections from Barhampur constituency. Sources further indicated that he may contest the election as a candidate of the opposition alliance, though no official confirmation has been made so far.
The development has generated political interest in Barhampur, especially in view of Shyamanta Kashyap’s family legacy and growing political activity.
