Guwahati: The Gauhati Press Club (GPC) on December 26 organised its first Women Journalists’ Conclave titled “Let’s Talk” at the GPC premises in Guwahati. The day-long event, supported by leading Assamese magazine Nandini, was attended by around 200 journalists.
The inaugural session was graced by newly elected Press Club of India (PCI) President Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty as Chief Guest, along with Smitakshi B. Goswami, CMD of Pratidin Time, and veteran journalist Maini Mahanta.
Addressing the gathering, Pisharoty spoke on the current state of Indian media and emphasised the importance of press freedom. She also raised concerns over the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP), stating that it could restrict journalists’ rights, and said the PCI plans to engage with press clubs across India, including GPC, on the issue.
Smitakshi B. Goswami termed Pisharoty’s election as PCI President a “ray of hope” for Indian journalism and pledged support for independent and ethical journalism.
The conclave featured three additional sessions where senior women journalists from Assam discussed workplace challenges faced by women journalists, sharing experiences as reporters, TV anchors and desk professionals.
