CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reviews Final Preparations for Inauguration of Swahid Smarak Khetra
Guwahati— Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the Swahid Smarak Khetra (Martyrs’ Column) at Boragaon and reviewed the final preparations ahead of its inauguration on December 10, observed as Swahid Divas. The iconic memorial has been built in honour of the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.
The Swahid Smarak Khetra, whose foundation stone was laid in 2019, stands on more than 98 bigha of land. The project includes water bodies, an auditorium, a prayer hall, a cycle track and facilities for a sound-and-light show that will depict key phases of the Assam Agitation and the history of Assam.
During the visit, the Chief Minister inspected different components of the memorial and reviewed last-minute finishing works. He assessed the progress along with senior officials and issued instructions to ensure timely completion of all pending tasks before inauguration day.
Dr Sarma suggested several measures to further enhance the aesthetic, structural and commemorative features of the Martyrs’ Column. He said the site must stand as a permanent symbol of Assam’s gratitude to the martyrs and serve as a place for future generations to reflect on their sacrifices. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving the memory of those who laid down their lives during the Assam Movement.
The Swahid Smarak Khetra will be formally inaugurated on December 10, coinciding with Swahid Divas, a day dedicated to remembering and honouring the martyrs.
Additional Chief Secretary of Cultural Affairs B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary for the Implementation of the Assam Accord G.D. Tripathi, Special Commissioner and Special Secretary of PWD Raj Chakraborty, and other senior officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the inspection.
