Guwahati: A devastating fire broke out on Sunday morning at the Post Office building near 8 No. Gate, Bharalumukh, resulting in two fatalities and one person injured. The blaze originated around 10:10 am on the third floor of the G+3 residential structure, reportedly due to an LPG gas leakage from the cylinder regulator in the kitchen of a 3BHK flat.
According to the Guwahati Fire & Emergency Services, the control room alerted the teams at 10:10 am, with the first two fire tenders leaving the station by 10:11 am. Additional units were mobilised at 10:14 am and 10:20 am. A total of eight fire tenders from Guwahati, Pandu, Lakhra and Chandmari stations were engaged in the operation, which continued till 1 pm.
Firefighters rescued one injured person, identified as Bimal Krishna Sharma (60), who was immediately shifted to Kumar Nursing Home.
Tragically, two residents — Debabrat Choudhury (48) and Pompy Bora Choudhury (32) — lost their lives in the incident. Their bodies were later handed over to the local police.
Preliminary estimates indicate that property worth ₹1 crore was involved in the fire, with losses assessed at ₹18 lakh. Firefighters managed to save property valued at ₹82 lakh, officials said.
Authorities are continuing further investigations into the incident.
