Guwahati: A woman who had been missing for nearly 12 days was found dead near Ganesh Temple in Khanapara, Guwahati, on Saturday. Her decomposed body was found inside a gunny bag.

The woman was identified by her family as 38-year-old Jina Baishya, who lived in the Koinadhora area. Police suspect that the body may have been left at the spot, but the circumstances are yet to be confirmed.

The incident came to light after some local residents noticed the body and informed the police. Officers from Dispur Police Station soon reached the area. A forensic team also visited the spot and collected samples for examination.

A forensic official said the body was badly decomposed and appeared to be around a week old. The official said that the clothes and bangles found on the body suggested that it could be a woman. However, further examination would be needed to confirm the details.

Police later sent the body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem examination.

According to information available, Baishya had been missing for nearly 12 days. Her family had filed a missing person complaint at Basistha Police Station after they failed to find her.

The family had also reportedly contacted the police in Meghalaya to seek help in tracing her.

A local woman who reached the spot said she suspected that the body could belong to Baishya. She said she knew that a woman from Koinadhora had been missing for several days.

The woman also said that the body was covered with a cloth when she reached the location and that only a hand was visible.

Baishya reportedly had two children, a son and a daughter. She was also known to work as a ticket collector in the Khanapara area, according to local residents.

Police are now trying to find out what happened to her and how she died. The post-mortem report and forensic findings are expected to provide more information about the case.
