Guwahati: Itendra Prasad, VSM, Additional Director General, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), addressed a special session at the Infra Build Northeast Conference organised by Indian Infrastructure in Guwahati on September 16.
Speaking on road construction in remote and difficult terrain, Prasad shared his 36 years of experience with BRO, including his experience in the Northeast.
He highlighted four major areas related to infrastructure development.
The first was the key challenges during the planning and execution stages, including the quality of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), quality assurance and maintenance after construction.
He also highlighted the use of new technologies such as LiDAR and drone surveys, AI and digital twins for project management, mechanised and automated equipment, new-generation pavement materials and precast modular construction. He also mentioned specialised technologies such as Rejupave for cold-climate and high-altitude areas.
Prasad said delays in utility shifting, extreme monsoon conditions and short working seasons remain major challenges for infrastructure projects. He stressed the need for all stakeholders to work in coordination to reduce delays and disruptions.
On future priorities, he highlighted strategic frontier connectivity, alternate road routes, bypasses around towns and cities, and better connectivity to tourism centres.
He also pointed to upcoming opportunities, including high-speed economic corridors, road connectivity with ASEAN countries and bridges over the Brahmaputra and other major rivers.
In his closing remarks, Prasad said infrastructure development should focus on connecting remote villages, strengthening border connectivity, supporting economic growth and meeting the aspirations of people.
