Guwahati: Peerless Hospital Guwahati has successfully treated a 63-year-old man from Kokrajhar district suffering from cervical dystonia, a neurological disorder that causes painful and involuntary twisting of the neck.
The patient underwent a customized botulinum toxin injection procedure on June 5 under the supervision of Dr. Rajeshkumar V. Kurmi, Consultant Neurologist at Peerless Hospital Guwahati.
According to the hospital, the patient showed significant improvement in pain and abnormal neck movements in the weeks following the treatment, allowing him to return to his normal daily activities.
Dr. Kurmi said botulinum toxin therapy is one of the most effective treatment options for cervical dystonia and several other neurological disorders. He noted that proper patient selection and expert administration can greatly improve symptoms and quality of life.
Cervical dystonia is a neurological condition that causes involuntary muscle contractions, forcing the head and neck into abnormal positions. The disorder can lead to severe pain, limited movement and difficulties in daily life.
Botulinum toxin therapy works by blocking abnormal nerve signals that cause excessive muscle contractions. The treatment is also used for conditions such as blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, post-stroke spasticity, cerebral palsy-related spasticity, chronic migraine, excessive drooling associated with Parkinson’s disease and certain tremor disorders.
Commenting on the successful treatment, Dr. Gautam Kr Das said the achievement reflects the growing availability of advanced neurological care in Assam and the Northeast.
