Guwahati: In a major setback for consumers amid rising inflation, fuel prices across Assam have increased sharply following a nationwide retail tariff revision by oil companies. Petrol and diesel prices have been hiked by around ₹3 per litre across the state.

The latest revision marks the first major increase in retail fuel prices in nearly four years. The hike comes amid rising global crude oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions in international energy supply chains.

According to the revised district-wise fuel price charts, petrol prices in Guwahati and the rest of Kamrup Metropolitan have crossed the ₹100 mark, reaching ₹101.21 per litre, while diesel prices have risen to ₹92.50 per litre.

Among the highest fuel rates in the state, Majuli and Lakhimpur recorded petrol prices of ₹103.24 per litre. Majuli also reported the highest diesel price in Assam at ₹94.47 per litre, followed by Dhemaji at ₹94.06 per litre.

In Upper Assam, Dibrugarh recorded petrol prices of ₹102.32 per litre and diesel at ₹93.53 per litre, while Jorhat saw petrol prices rise to ₹101.76 per litre and diesel to ₹93.00 per litre.

Meanwhile, Dima Hasao reported comparatively lower diesel prices at ₹91.93 per litre. Districts including Bongaigaon, Chirang and Golaghat recorded petrol prices near ₹101.17 per litre.

The sudden increase has triggered concern among commuters, transport operators and daily wage earners across the state. Several transport associations have indicated that local bus fares, freight charges and auto-rickshaw fares may soon be revised to offset rising fuel costs.

Economists have warned that the fuel price hike could lead to a rise in transportation and logistics costs, potentially increasing the prices of essential commodities and adding further pressure on household budgets across Assam.
