Cachar: A special bird count drive was organised at Masimpur Military Station on Friday to observe Endemic Bird Day and promote awareness on bird conservation and biodiversity protection.
The programme was held as part of the annual initiative by Bird Count India, which encourages documentation of endemic and rare bird species through citizen-science platforms like eBird.
Military personnel, local birders, volunteers, nature enthusiasts and families participated in the drive by carrying out bird observation and documentation across different ecological areas within and around the military station.
Organisers said the evergreen forest patches in and around Masimpur provide an important habitat for several forest-dependent bird species found in the Barak Valley region.
During the bird count, participants recorded several notable species including the Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Ruby-cheeked Sunbird and Green-billed Malkoha. Other sightings included Puff-throated Babbler, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Plain Flowerpecker, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker and Bengal Bush Lark.
Organisers said that although the Barak Valley does not have many strictly endemic bird species, the region remains important for documenting lowland forest birds and habitat specialists of the Indo-Myanmar region.
The programme concluded with an awareness session on environmental conservation, protection of natural habitats and sustainable living practices.
Officials said the initiative reflected Masimpur Military Station’s continued commitment towards biodiversity conservation and preservation of green cover in the Cachar and Barak Valley region.
