Guwahati: A one-day stakeholder workshop on “Balanced Fertilizer Use for Sustainable Agriculture” was organised at the Horticultural Research Station by ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, bringing together around 150 participants from across the Northeast. The participants included representatives from 47 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, along with officials from Assam Agricultural University, line departments, input dealers, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), progressive farmers and bio-input producers. The workshop was attended by key experts including Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director of ATARI Zone VI, Dr. Bidyut C. Deka, former Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, and Dr. Manoranjan Neog, Director of Extension Education, AAU.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kadirvel said that balanced fertilizer use is a national priority and stressed the need for a coordinated effort among all stakeholders to ensure sustainable agricultural growth. The workshop aimed to create awareness on proper nutrient management and to prepare a state-level plan to reduce excessive fertilizer use without affecting crop productivity. The discussions were aligned with national initiatives like PM-PRANAM, which promotes efficient and sustainable use of fertilizers.

During the technical sessions, experts highlighted that the use of urea in Assam remains high, especially in maize cultivation, leading to an imbalance in soil nutrients. It was observed that farmers are using less phosphorus, potash and micronutrients, which can affect soil health and long-term productivity. Participants suggested promoting integrated nutrient management practices, including the use of organic manure, bio-inputs and green manuring. The need for better monitoring systems, proper fertilizer distribution based on landholding, and greater involvement of input dealers and FPOs was also discussed.

The workshop also emphasised the important role of Krishi Vigyan Kendras in spreading awareness among farmers through field demonstrations and training programmes. They will also promote eco-friendly practices like green manure and Azolla cultivation. The programme concluded with a collective commitment from all stakeholders to reduce nutrient imbalance and work towards sustainable agriculture in the region.
