Guwahati: Singer Marmita Mitra is facing strong backlash in Assam after allegations that she performed songs of Zubeen Garg in a “distorted and poor manner” during Bihu events.

According to reports, several organisations across the state have filed FIRs against the singer at different police stations. These include complaints lodged in Dispur, Sivasagar and Sonari by groups like All Assam Yuva Sangha and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), among others.

The organisations alleged that the singer performed popular songs of Zubeen Garg without proper respect, hurting the emotions of Assamese people. They have demanded strict legal action and a fair investigation into the matter.

Following the controversy, several scheduled performances of Marmita Mitra have been cancelled in different parts of Assam, including North Guwahati, Rangia, Nalbari, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Kohora and Tinsukia. Event organisers said the decision was taken to protect Assamese culture and respect for Zubeen Garg.

Her name has also been removed from the cultural programme of a major Rongali Bihu event in Panjabari, Guwahati. Organisers stated that they did not want controversy to affect the dignity of the programme.

The issue has also sparked strong reactions on social media, where many people have raised concerns about protecting Assamese music and culture.

The controversy gained more attention after Zubeen Garg’s sister Pomi Borthakur raised the issue online. His wife Garima Saikia Garg also urged people not to distort his songs.

With protests growing across the state, there is a possibility that more of the singer’s shows may be cancelled in the coming days.
