Guwahati: A tragic incident was reported in Guwahati on Monday morning when a woman allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from the old Saraighat Bridge near Jalukbari.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 9:50 am. Officials from the Jalukbari Outpost informed the Assam Fire and Emergency Services about the incident shortly after receiving the information.
Following the alert, a rescue team from the nearest fire station—located about six kilometres from the site—immediately rushed to the spot. The operation involved a Quick Response Team vehicle and an IRB vehicle, while personnel from the River Police also joined the search effort.
Rescue teams conducted an intensive search operation throughout the day in the waters of the Brahmaputra River. However, despite the extensive search, the woman could not be traced.
Jalukbari Police said that the identity and age of the woman remain unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Due to fading daylight and lack of visibility in the evening, the rescue operation was suspended for the day. After conducting the search for several hours, the rescue team returned to the station at around 4:32 pm.
Officials stated that the search operation will resume again on Tuesday morning.
It may be mentioned that several incidents of suicide attempts by jumping from the Saraighat Bridge have been reported in the past. Concerned citizens have once again called for stronger safety measures and better surveillance in the area to prevent such tragic incidents.
