Guwahati: Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah arrived in Assam on Thursday night on a two-day visit. He reached Dibrugarh on Thursday night.
On Friday, Shah will lay the foundation stone for the second complex of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Dibrugarh. He is also scheduled to attend the Mising Cultural Festival in Dhemaji.
The visit comes at a crucial time ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections and is expected to focus on key political discussions. There is strong speculation that important decisions related to candidate selection for the upcoming elections may be taken during Shah’s visit.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that Amit Shah will participate in a detailed political meeting at the state BJP headquarters on Friday. The Chief Minister also stated that the seat-sharing arrangement among alliance partners is expected to be finalised between February 15 and 20.
With Amit Shah present, the state BJP leadership is likely to take crucial decisions during Friday’s meeting. The future of several BJP ticket aspirants is expected to depend on the outcome of this discussion.
Later in the evening, Shah will return to Guwahati to attend the political meeting at the BJP state office before leaving for West Bengal.
Notably, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have visited Assam multiple times over the past two months in the run-up to the Assembly elections. The Prime Minister is also expected to visit Assam again in February.
With the BJP aiming to retain power in Assam in the 2026 Assembly elections, senior national leaders of the party have intensified their engagements in the state. The political meeting to be held on Friday at the BJP state headquarters is being seen as highly significant in shaping the party’s electoral strategy.
