Guwahati: An incident of alleged assault on a young woman in the Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati has triggered strong reactions across Assam. Acting on the complaint, Panbazar Police have detained two accused in connection with the case.
The accused have been identified as Kriti Gupta and Pratik Kumar Gupta. The two were detained a day after the incident.
According to reports, the victim is a student of Dispur Law College. Based on her complaint lodged at Panbazar Police Station, police initiated an investigation and subsequently detained the two accused.
The incident occurred on Friday in the busy Fancy Bazar locality. As per information, a minor collision took place between a scooter and a car in which the student was travelling. What could have remained a minor argument reportedly turned violent.
Eyewitnesses stated that as soon as the car driver stepped out, the accused allegedly attacked him using a helmet. When the student tried to intervene and stop the assault, she too was allegedly attacked.
Serious allegations have also been raised that the accused attempted to tear the victim’s clothes in the middle of the road. Additionally, it has been alleged that the accused made derogatory remarks against Assam and the Assamese community, further intensifying the gravity of the incident.
Following the incident, the victim filed a formal complaint at Panbazar Police Station, after which police began their probe. As part of the investigation, the two accused have been detained.
Police sources informed that CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded. Authorities stated that a detailed investigation is underway and the full facts of the case will be revealed after completion of the probe.
