Guwahati : Hindu leader and International Hindu Parishad chief Praveen Togadia on Tuesday said that Assam may see a movement like the Ram Mandir agitation if the government does not act against illegal immigrants.

Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Togadia demanded a “Miya-free Assam” and said that people no longer want promises but clear results.

He said that more than 10 lakh people who were excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be arrested and sent to detention camps. He also said that Muslims who did not apply for the NRC should be arrested soon.

Togadia questioned many documents submitted during the NRC process and said several of them were fake. He demanded DNA tests to identify illegal immigrants. According to him, DNA tests take only two to three hours and can easily be done in India.

He also asked the Assam government to publish district-wise lists of people whose ancestors’ names appeared in the 1951 voters’ list. He claimed that if everyone is asked to undergo DNA testing, illegal immigrants from Bangladesh would be easily identified.

Referring to the earlier Assam movement led by AASU, Togadia said that although the NRC was updated due to that struggle, it failed to give proper results. He claimed that this time people from across India would join the movement.

Togadia said preparations are already going on in nearly one lakh villages. He said that if needed, police and security forces could be used to identify illegal immigrants by going door to door and send them to detention camps. He also demanded detention camps in every district.

He also called for an economic boycott and said people would be asked not to buy goods or use services linked to Bangladeshi immigrants.

Togadia said that the International Hindu Parishad would hold meetings in the next two months to build a “Miya-free Assam.” He claimed that if the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Chief Minister, and he himself fail to act, people from five lakh villages across India would join the movement.

Several leaders of the International Hindu Parishad were present at the press conference.
