Guwahati: Purabi Dairy celebrated its annual pre-Rongali Bihu programme on Saturday at its premises with employees and media persons. On the occasion, the dairy cooperative announced that it has crossed an annual turnover of ₹400 crore in the financial year 2025–26.

The growth of Purabi Dairy has been supported by its large network of over 58,000 dairy farmers across Assam. At present, the cooperative procures an average of 1.6 lakh litres of milk per day, while peak procurement has crossed 2 lakh litres per day.

During the last financial year, more than 900 new Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) were formed. With this, the total number of societies under Purabi Dairy has increased to over 1,600. To improve milk collection and maintain quality, 11 new Bulk Milk Cooling Centres (BMCs) were also set up, taking the total number to 59 centres.

Purabi Dairy’s turnover increased by 33 percent, compared to ₹306 crore in 2024–25. The growth was supported by higher sales of both milk and dairy products.

According to North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), which markets Purabi products, the overall product volume grew by 48 percent, while pouch milk sales increased by 10 percent.

Among value-added products, curd recorded 49 percent growth, paneer 48 percent, and ghee 37 percent. Sales of cream increased by 12 percent, while lassi grew by 9 percent. Purabi also introduced new products such as ice cream, flavoured milk and Purabi Smart UHT tetra pack milk.

Purabi Dairy has also expanded its market to Barak Valley and strengthened its presence in eastern Assam. A new 20,000 litres per day milk processing plant was recently started in Silchar to improve supply in the region.

At present, Purabi Dairy operates three processing plants — a 1.5 lakh litres per day plant at Panjabari in Guwahati, a 10,000 litres per day plant in Dhemaji, and a 20,000 litres per day plant in Silchar.

WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida said the growth of Purabi Dairy shows the strength of its cooperative model and the support of thousands of farmers. He said the dairy will continue working to improve farmers’ income and provide quality dairy products to consumers.

NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose said the cooperative paid around ₹25 crore per month to dairy farmers across Assam during the last financial year.

Purabi Dairy is also planning to increase its production capacity. The Panjabari plant is being upgraded to 3 lakh litres per day. New dairy plants with 1 lakh litres per day capacity are planned in Jorhat and Dibrugarh, while a 50,000 litres per day plant will be set up in Dhemaji.

These projects are expected to strengthen the dairy sector in Assam and support the state’s plan to handle 10 lakh litres of milk per day in the future.
