Guwahati: Senior editor and noted literary figure Pradip Barua, the long-time editor of the Assamese literary magazine Prantik, passed away at the age of 87 on Wednessday. He breathed his last due to age-related ailments.
Pradip Barua took over the responsibility of Prantik after the death of its founder, Bhabendra Nath Saikia, and led the magazine for several decades. Under his guidance, Prantik completed over 40 years of continuous publication and became one of the most respected literary magazines in Assam.
Known for his quiet nature and strong values, Barua played a key role in promoting Assamese literature, culture and progressive thought. He was widely respected by writers, readers and intellectuals across the state.
Several writers and cultural organisations expressed deep grief over his death, calling it an irreparable loss to Assamese literature.
He is survived by family members, relatives and a large number of admirers.
