Guwahati: The winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly started with strong protests from the Opposition. They blamed the government for several lapses linked to the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. The ruling party supported the Opposition’s move to adjourn the House and discuss the issue.

Opposition Questions Security and Delay

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia asked why Zubeen Garg did not get proper security during the event he attended in Singapore.
He said:

“This is not only a political issue. It is an emotional matter for all Assamese people. The mystery around Zubeen Garg’s death has hurt the whole state.”

Saikia also pointed out the delay and confusion in bringing Zubeen’s body back to Guwahati. He asked why the government could not act faster.

Akhil Gogoi Protests, Speaker Removes Him

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi protested inside the House on the first day of the session. The Speaker later ordered security staff to take him out of the Assembly.

Before leaving, Gogoi said:

“More than two months have passed, but the investigation is still happening in Dispur instead of Singapore.”

He questioned why some people linked to the event were called for questioning while others were left out. Gogoi also asked why the investigation team did not record the statements of the yacht captain and the rescue team who were present during the incident.
He said the government failed to provide a protocol officer and a doctor with a famous personality like Zubeen Garg.

Other Parties Also Raise Questions

AIUDF MLA Ashraful Hussain asked the government to explain how Zubeen died. He also asked why the Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by officer Munna Prasad Gupta, reached the incident spot in Singapore only after 40 days.
Hussain criticised the government for not using a special aircraft to bring Zubeen’s body back home.

CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar claimed that some powerful groups are trying to control the situation. He compared Zubeen’s case with what happened to cultural icon Bishnu Prasad Rabha, saying:

“People criticised Rabha during his life but praised him after his death. The same thing is happening with Zubeen Garg.”

Congress MLA Nandita Das demanded that one terminal of LGBI Airport in Guwahati should be named after Zubeen Garg.

Public Pressure Continues

The strong reactions inside the Assembly show how important this issue is for the people of Assam. The One-Man Inquiry Commission is still collecting statements, and Opposition parties want a faster, clearer, and more transparent investigation.
