Guwahati: The new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has started commercial operations, increasing the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million.
The terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025. The new facility became fully operational after phased trials and system checks, including testing of check-in counters, baggage handling, security systems and aircraft movement processes.
The start of operations was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL). A ceremonial boarding pass was issued to the first departing passenger, and an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai arrived at the new terminal.
At present, the airport connects 21 domestic destinations and three international cities — Bangkok, Paro and Singapore. It handles more than 130 aircraft movements daily and is among the 10 busiest airports in the country. In recent years, passenger traffic crossed nine million annually.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new terminal will boost tourism and economic growth in Assam. He added that the design of the terminal respects the culture and identity of the state.
The terminal has been designed with inspiration from Assam’s kopou phool and bamboo traditions. More than 140 metric tonnes of bamboo have been used in construction. The structure also reflects elements of the Apatani bamboo style of Arunachal Pradesh.
The airport is operated by Guwahati International Airport Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited.
In the financial year 2024–25, the airport handled 6.57 million passengers, including over 91,000 international travellers. It also managed more than 12,800 metric tonnes of cargo.
Officials said the expanded capacity will help Guwahati strengthen its role as the main aviation gateway to Northeast India and improve connectivity with the rest of the country and Southeast Asia.
