Guwahati: The nationwide strike called by ten central trade unions saw a mixed response across Assam on Wednesday. Workers protested against the central government’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate” policies.

In Guwahati, the main protest took place at Khanapara, where hundreds of union members gathered around 9 am, shouting slogans against the Centre’s labour policies. The city’s transport services were badly hit. Private buses, tourist taxis, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and maxi cabs stayed off the roads for 24 hours. Even cab services like Uber, Ola, and Rapido were unavailable, leaving many commuters stranded.

“Drivers are suffering because of heavy penalties and unfair rules. Many have quit driving. The government must act now before the system breaks down,” a protestor said.

Protesters demanded a minimum monthly wage of ₹26,000, a daily wage of ₹661 for tea workers, and protection of the Construction Workers’ Welfare Council.
