Guwahati: In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, three influential minority MLAs from Congress and AIUDF are set to join the regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The move signals a significant shift in the political landscape of Barak Valley.

The development gained momentum after a crucial meeting in Guwahati with AGP president and minister Atul Bora and minister Keshab Mahanta.

Three MLAs Likely to Join AGP

The MLAs who are reportedly set to join AGP are:

  • Siddique Ahmed, MLA from South Karimganj (Congress)
  • Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, MLA from Sonai (AIUDF)
  • Nizam Uddin Choudhury, MLA from Algapur (AIUDF)

Siddique Ahmed had earlier been suspended from the Congress in 2022 for allegedly violating the party whip during the Rajya Sabha elections. He is now reportedly ready to formally join AGP. However, due to health reasons, his son is likely to contest the upcoming election.

Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, considered one of the most influential leaders in AIUDF, has recently expressed dissatisfaction over opposition unity. His shift to AGP is expected to create a new political equation in Barak Valley. Similarly, Nizam Uddin Choudhury is also preparing to enter the NDA camp with hopes of returning as MLA.

Boost for NDA in Barak Valley

Since AGP is a key ally of the BJP-led NDA, the joining of these three MLAs would significantly strengthen the ruling alliance in Barak Valley. At present, the NDA holds 9 out of the 15 Assembly seats in the region. If the three MLAs formally join AGP, the party will gain three seats in Barak Valley, where it currently has no MLA.

Additionally, Karimganj North MLA Kamalaksha De Purkayastha has already extended support to the government, further weakening Congress and the opposition camp in the region.

Political observers believe that with possible constituency reorganization and shifting loyalties, the 2026 Assembly election may witness sharp polarization in Assam politics. AGP appears to be expanding its strategy beyond the Brahmaputra Valley and is now focusing on strengthening its base in minority-dominated areas of Barak Valley.

The formal joining of the three MLAs is expected within the next few days, marking what could be a turning point in the region’s political dynamics ahead of the crucial 2026 elections.
