Guwahati: While Assam recorded a strong overall voter turnout of 85.96%, Guwahati once again showed lower participation compared to many other parts of the state.
Among the city constituencies, New Guwahati recorded the lowest at 72.37%, followed by Dispur at 75.04% and Guwahati Central at 76.07%. Dimoria also recorded a relatively low 81.79%, while Jalukbari stood at 82.04%—both still below many rural areas where turnout crossed 90%.
In contrast, several rural constituencies reported over 90% voting, showing much higher public participation.
This clearly highlights a trend—urban voters are less active than rural voters. Even with better facilities and easier access, many city voters do not come out to vote.
Experts say busy lifestyles, work pressure, and less interest in local issues may be the reasons. On the other hand, rural voters are more connected to local problems and show greater interest in voting.
The lower turnout in key Guwahati seats like Dispur, Jalukbari, and Dimoria could play an important role in close contests. Now, all eyes are on the counting day to see how this urban voting pattern affects the final results.
