Guwahati: With the election scheduled for April 9 drawing closer, the district administration of Kamrup Metropolitan district has intensified preparations to ensure smooth and fair conduct of polling.
Addressing a press conference, District Commissioner Swapnil Paul said that several monitoring teams have been deployed following the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). A total of nine flying squads and nine surveillance teams have been formed to keep strict watch on violations.
To make the election process faster and more transparent, the Election Commission has introduced the PRO App. Through this app, presiding officers will be able to update polling data in real time, making the process easier compared to earlier manual collection.
A control room has also been set up to prevent the use of illegal money during elections. The team will monitor suspicious financial transactions, unaccounted cash, gold, or any items used to influence voters. Citizens have been urged to report any such activities.
A total of 1,218 polling stations have been set up across five Assembly constituencies in the district—Dispur, Dimoria (SC), New Guwahati, Guwahati Central and Jalukbari.
The election schedule includes:
- Last date for filing nominations: March 23
- Scrutiny of nominations: March 24
- Last date for withdrawal: March 26
- Polling: April 9
- Counting of votes: May 4
Separate Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers have been appointed for each constituency. Nomination papers will be received at designated rooms in the DC office.
A 24-hour toll-free helpline number 1950 has been issued for election-related complaints and reporting violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
A total of 10,49,644 voters will exercise their franchise in the district. This includes:
- 5,05,429 male voters
- 5,44,183 female voters
- 62 third-gender voters
Constituency-wise details:
- Dispur: 2,43,176 voters (1,17,027 male, 1,26,137 female); 272 polling stations
- Dimoria (SC): 2,16,949 voters (1,05,384 male, 1,11,559 female); 262 polling stations
- New Guwahati: 1,91,447 voters (91,398 male, 1,00,045 female); 219 polling stations
- Guwahati Central: 1,91,758 voters (96,967 male, 97,788 female); 218 polling stations
- Jalukbari: 2,06,314 voters (97,653 male, 1,08,654 female); 247 polling stations
Officials said that all polling stations in Dispur, Guwahati Central and New Guwahati constituencies are located in urban areas. Model polling stations will also be set up in each constituency.
The district administration has appealed to all political parties and citizens to cooperate in ensuring peaceful and fair elections.
