The 2024 Lok Sabha election result in Jorhat has brought a major political shift in Upper Assam. With Gaurav Gogoi representing Jorhat in Parliament, the Congress sees strong signs of change in a region that was largely dominated by the BJP-led NDA in the 2021 Assembly elections.
The Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency includes 10 Assembly segments — Sonari, Mahmora, Demow, Sibsagar, Nazira, Majuli (ST), Teok, Jorhat, Mariani and Titabor. In 2021, eight of these seats were won by BJP and AGP candidates. Congress had only two MLAs from this belt.
However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the trend changed clearly. Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi secured a lead in 9 out of the 10 Assembly segments against BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi. Only Majuli (ST) remained with the BJP.
This shift is politically significant. It shows that voters who had earlier supported BJP candidates in Assembly elections voted for Congress in the parliamentary election. Political observers say this reflects changing public mood, local dissatisfaction, and the personal connect of Gaurav Gogoi with voters.
With Gaurav Gogoi now representing Jorhat in Parliament, Congress leaders believe development issues, youth engagement and regional concerns will get stronger focus. The party hopes this momentum will continue and translate into Assembly-level gains in 2026.
For Congress, the 2024 result is more than just a parliamentary victory — it is seen as a foundation for a larger political comeback in Upper Assam. If the current trend continues, the 2026 Assembly elections in the Jorhat belt could witness a major turnaround.
The numbers from 2024 have clearly sent a message: Jorhat is no longer a one-sided political ground, and Congress is preparing to turn this momentum into a bigger change in the coming elections.
