Guwahati: The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) demolished Mahafezkhana, a 160-year-old land records office, for the Brahmaputra riverfront project. The decision upset many people, as officials did not ask residents before taking action.

Built between 1855 and 1865, Mahafezkhana had strong brick walls, iron gates, and a covered verandah. It served as a record room near the treasury for nearly 150 years, storing land documents and administrative orders.

People have criticized the demolition. Many expressed anger on social media over the loss of this heritage site.

Senior journalist Mrinal Talukdar called it an “outrageous” on X. He said Mahafezkhana was one of the oldest concrete buildings in Assam and Northeast India.
