CM Distributes Cheques to Women in Nagaon
Nagaon: As part of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA), Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed cheques to 26,585 beneficiaries from the Nagaon-Batadrava Legislative Assembly Constituency, including 19,628 rural and 6,957 urban women, at a public meeting held at Nehrubali, Nagaon.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said that the Assam Government has fulfilled its promise to provide ₹1,250 per month to 32 lakh families under the Orunodoi 3.0 scheme. He noted that Assam’s success has inspired several other states to launch similar welfare schemes.
Dr. Sarma stated that crimes against women have declined in the past four years and that schemes like Nijut Moina have encouraged more girls to pursue higher education. The number of applications under Nijut Moina has grown from 58,000 last year to 5.8 lakh this year.
Highlighting the impact of welfare schemes, the Chief Minister said that bicycles, scooters, and financial aid have transformed the lives of women across the state — empowering daughters, mothers, widows, and the elderly.
He mentioned that Assam’s model of women empowerment has been appreciated across the country, including by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who launched a similar initiative after consulting Dr. Sarma.
The Chief Minister added that Assam’s four lakh Self-Help Groups (SHGs), involving 40 lakh women, have taken loans worth ₹21,000 crore, with 99% repayment, showing their financial discipline.
Dr. Sarma also explained that under MMUA, beneficiaries receive ₹10,000 in the first phase, followed by ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 in later phases based on performance and utilization.
The event was attended by Minister Keshab Mahanta, MLAs Rupak Sharma, Jitu Goswami, Shashikanta Das, and senior officials including District Commissioner Debashish Sharma and ASRLM Mission Director Kuntal Mani Sarma Bordoloi.
