Guwahati: Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the Integrated Judicial Court Complex at Rangmahal in North Guwahati in the presence of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, judges of the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court.
Envisioned as a modern judicial hub, the complex will be built over 148 bighas of land at an estimated cost of Rs 1,700 crore and will house the Gauhati High Court, advocates’ and office buildings, district courts of Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan, parking facilities and allied infrastructure. The project aims to strengthen access to justice and improve efficiency in judicial functioning.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr Sarma said the existing High Court building would not meet the aspirations of the next 50 years, adding that the new complex would reflect a modern Assam while upholding the traditions of the Gauhati High Court. He said the project was initiated following suggestions by former Chief Justices and with the approval of the full court.
The first phase of the project, costing Rs 480 crore, is expected to be completed within 24 months. The programme was attended by several Supreme Court judges, former Chief Justices, senior officials and members of the legal fraternity.
