Burn Care Day 2026 Observed at Guwahati

Guwahati: The Burn Care Foundation, a trust of NEMCARE Hospital, organized the 12th Burn Care Day 2026 as a day-long program at the Madhabdev Auditorium of Shankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on 11 February 2026.

The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Vinita Puri, Professor and Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at KEM Medical College, Mumbai, as the Chief Guest Speaker. Special Guests included Dr. Kiran K. Nakarmi and Dr. Shankar Man Rai, Plastic Surgeons from Kirtipur Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr. Vinita Puri delivered an important talk on the prevention of burn injuries and first aid management in burn cases.

The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Hitesh Baruah, President of the Burn Care Foundation. An audio-visual presentation titled “A Ray of Hope” was presented by Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma, Secretary of the Foundation. The presentation highlighted the positive changes in burn treatment due to advanced facilities available in the burn unit. Dr. Sarma informed that since 2010, a total of 6,189 patients have been treated in the burn unit, and the mortality rate has been reduced to 22.6% because of improved treatment methods.

Dr. Nareswar Sarma spoke about “Arta Sewa,” a trust formed to support poor and needy burn patients. One of the major highlights of the day was the participation of burn survivors, who shared their personal experiences and journeys of recovery.

During the event, Best Worker Awards were presented to Achinta Das (Office Executive), Ms. Minakshi Boro (Nursing Assistant), and Ms. Nandikala Janki (Cleaner) of the NEMCARE Burn Unit in recognition of their dedicated service.

A short film on various aspects of burn injuries, produced by Dr. B.P. Sarma and directed by Ms. Smita Barman, was released by Dr. Hitesh Baruah. The film received appreciation from the audience. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks offered by Sri Biswajit Sarma, Marketing Executive of NEMCARE Hospital.

In the afternoon, a training program on Essential Burn Care was conducted. The session was chaired by Dr. Seemarekha Devi, Dr. Dipak Kr. Sarma, and Dr. Rabin Mazumdar. Faculty members included Dr. Vinita Puri (Mumbai), Dr. Shankar Man Rai and Dr. Kiran K. Nakarmi (Kathmandu), Dr. Badamutlang (NEIGRIMS, Shillong), Dr. Kabita Kalita (GMCH), and doctors from NEMCARE Hospital including Dr. B.P. Sarma, Dr. Mridupaban Saikia, Dr. Kabita S. Choudhury, Dr. Dipak Sarma, and Ms. V.S. Malingwan.

The training program continued on 12 February 2026 at Palash Bon, Gorchuk. A total of 110 doctors, nurses, and paramedics from various government hospitals of Assam attended the program.

The event was organized in collaboration with INTERBURNS, an international organization working to develop burn care services in developing countries, and in association with the Government of Assam.
