Guwahati: Assam Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Anurag Goel on Tuesday announced several key decisions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, which will be held for the first time after the delimitation of constituencies.
Addressing the media at Janata Bhawan, Goel said that people who were evicted from their previous homes must apply again from their current address to remain in the voter list. He said anyone whose name was earlier included in the voter roll is a valid citizen, but if they do not update their new location, the Election Commission cannot track them. BLOs will visit their old address, and if the person is not found, their name may be deleted.
Goel added that people from other states living in Assam can also register and vote here. Homeless individuals—such as those living on footpaths or in shelter homes—will also be included through the special revision process.
He said the special revision aims to add all eligible voters and remove ineligible names. The cut-off date for eligibility has been fixed as January 1, 2026. Goel said the election schedule is likely to be announced towards the end of February 2026.
The CEO also announced a major increase in polling stations across the state. Assam will get 1,826 more polling stations this time. The Election Commission has reduced the voter limit from 1,500 to 1,200 per booth, leading to the increase. Deputy Commissioners have finalised the new locations after discussions with local residents and authorities.
BLOs will begin door-to-door verification from November 22. They will visit each household three times. If a voter is registered in another place due to work, marriage or other reasons, their earlier entry will be removed. If not, the name will remain in the same booth after verification.
The draft voter list will be published on December 27. Citizens will get one month to file applications or corrections. The final voter list will be released on February 10.
